upgrade
December
5 is a great day to upgrade a Dutch website because most
people are busy with other things: it's the day that
Dutch kids get their presents from
Sinterklaas.
So this was the day we picked for our upgrade of
Schoolbank.nl, with a fresh new interface and many new
features. The 'my news' page shows what's new from your
friends and your schools. There are extended user
profiles and photo features. Plus content blocks where
the Schoolbank team posts 'editorial' material.

The new TES is
live today with Rosetta Web Services
The
UK's leading weekly education newspaper goes live today
with a stylish make-over and a new jobs site, powered by
Rosetta Web Services.
The jobs website is a central strategic element in the
TES business. It is a joint implementation of Rosetta's
new Services Oriented Architecture.
Programmers from TES
and Rosetta worked together, in Amsterdam and London, to
create the site in a few short months, re-building from
scratch the website workflow, including centralised user
registration, yet retaining the powerful underlying
database developed by Rosetta for the earlier System 6
implementation of TES.

classified advertising will move away from newspapers
completely in the coming years. Classified adverts from
the Guardian print edition were declining by about 9% a
year while internet advertising on Guardian Unlimited
was growing by about 50% each year - but from a much
lower base.

UK: internet ads
will overtake press next year
From the Guardian:
"UK internet advertising reached 7.8% - double radio's
market share - and is closing fast on national press
revenues, which were worth £1.9bn last year. Worryingly
for the press industry, online classified advertising
grew 62.4% year-on-year in 2005, to £262.2m. The online
classified growth was driven by advertising from the
automotive and recruitment sectors, while the IAB
reported that press revenues for classified advertising
fell 5.1% last year. Recruitment advertising was worth
22.1% of the total UK market."

Loot.com:
new design, new search engine
The
new Loot.com site from Rosetta, which goes live today,
is a multi-channel website allowing users to search ads
using attributes which are relevant for each channel.
The redesign shows Loot's commitment to better searching
through enriched data on its website. For this
latest phase we integrated the Fast search engine, which
works together with the Rosetta system to achieve entity
extraction, sometimes called parseing. (This is where a
computer reads the text and looks for items like make,
model and year for a car, or number of bedrooms for a
house.)
Traditionally, with
Loot's ad booking systems for print, you get 250
characters of text and a classification and that's it.
Now a user searching for cars can specify make, model,
year, etc. If you search for a house you can select
number of bedrooms, geographic location, etc.
Will users understand
these new features and the changes in the UI? Will they
turn back to browsing by classification? Is the humble
keyword actually the preferred method after all? It will
be fascinating to observe how site visitors use the new
approach.
Also new in this
release is the CAPS booking system which allows Loot
sales personnel to book ads live in real time for each
channel on the website. These are not conventional
classified ads but are sold for specific page positions
inside each channel.
- Immediate
bookings or advance reservations
- Bookings
by date range, page location and position
-
Permission-based access for sales personnel and
managers
- Ads can
link to normal ad details, external URL or
external feed (eg RSS)
-
Statistical reporting tool (views, clicks, CTR,
etc)

Rosetta is 10
years old
Ten years ago,
back in 1995, Rosetta was founded in Amsterdam, a
pioneer in internet software development. The first
commercial company, possibly in the world, to offer
commercial software for internet classifieds. Our first
customer was Buysell.com in Vancouver, Canada, with
30,000 ads. Features included full text searching,
browsing ads, online ad-booking for both web and print,
dealer inventory ads, photo ads, user registration for
personal memopad and email alerts... remember this was
1995. Checkout the old homepage at the
Wayback Machine.

Today, Rosetta is
a professional software company with international
customers. Our tools, methodologies and techniques have
been transformed over 10 years. But some things haven't
changed. We're still a small, flexible, innovative team
with some of the best minds in the business. We still
focus on user-generated content. And we still work with
the best media publishers in the world.
Thanks to
everyone, all our users, staff and customers, who helped
us build the amazing success story that Rosetta became.

Relaunch of
Loot.com
The UK's leading
classifieds marketplace, Loot, re-launches today
with a major re-design of both the newspaper and
website, Loot.com. The website is powered by
Rosetta.
A key element of the strategic
re-design is to offer best-of-breed features on the
web.
For the first time, new ads on
the website are free to view,
a completely new model for Loot. Also
new are better personalisation, improved photo ads
and priority listings -- all features designed to
help customers to sell their items faster online.
For buyers, there's an improved search engine with
integrated email/SMS alerts. Loot TXT is a new
mobile classifieds service using SMS messages.
Customers can place ads via SMS and receive
automatic SMS alerts when the items they are looking
for are advertised on Loot.com.
Claire Payne,
Loot Managing Director, said: "Loot is a hugely
well-loved and respected brand in the UK and the
changes, which are in response to consumer needs,
will further cement Loot's position as the leading
marketplace for buying and selling locally."

now number 6 in the ranking of marketplace sites -
not bad for a site that launched only 4 months
before the chart was published!

Distributed Searching (Meta-Search)
Rosetta today
announced a new feature for websites powered by
Rosetta System 6: Synchronous Distributed Searching.

wish to integrate the results of a dynamic query
from external sites into their own pages, in real
time.
Examples:

Intelligent
Targeting™ on Vakanties.nl
In a combined
announcement on the eve of Nexpo, Rosetta today
announced an innovative new advertising technique
and a new customer. The technique, called
Intelligent Targeting, involves live targeting of
travel and holiday offers to users of the website
SchoolBANK.nl. The leading travel site
Vakanties.nl
has entered a 1-year contract with Rosetta for the new
Intelligent Targeting ad service.
SchoolBANK
visitors now receive targeted travel offers based on
their age group. A simple XML exchange takes place
over the internet in real time between Schoolbank.nl
and Vakanties.nl each time a page is loaded. This
real-time XML data exchange has 3 major benefits:
- real time:
lowest prices and guaranteed availability
- targeting:
cheap flights to London or family holidays in
Turkey, for example, based on the age group of the
user
- efficiency:
quicker for the user, more efficient for the
advertiser
"Intelligent
Targeting is better for us than traditional banners
because it lets us serve relevant, real-time content
directly from our inventory," said a spokesman for
Vakanties.nl.

Record-breaking
690 tabloid pages of jobs
The Times
Educational Supplement (TES) today set a new world
record for the biggest-ever tabloid classifieds
section, with 690 pages of recruitment advertising
-- over 9000 jobs in a
single newspaper edition!
The website that
publishes the jobs for TES is powered by Rosetta and
continued serving pages at fast speeds throughout
the huge surge in traffic, without any problems. The
TES offers jobs for school teachers in the UK and
abroad: most schools advertise their jobs in the
Spring or Autumn, which explains the extreme
seasonal peaks experienced by the TES newspaper and
its website.
